Gold slid from 4,182 to 4,134 in the first hours of Asia, straight through this week's lows at 4,147.5, on the morning of the US jobs report.
Key levels
The plan
- Buy a rejection of this week's lows at 4,147.5, sell a rejection at 4,193–4,203.
- Testing (separately): a 1-hour wick rejection at a level, entered on the next 1h candle, stop within the usual $8.
What happened
The 02:00 UK hour dropped to 4,133.83, $14 through the 4,147.5 line, then closed back above it at 4,151.47: a 1-hour rejection. I bought the 03:00 UK open at 4,151.83 with the stop at 4,144 (beyond the level and inside the $8 cap, per the test's stop rule) and took about 1R at 4,159.49 eighteen minutes later. The lowest it went after entry was 4,147.35. Then a trade I shouldn't have taken: at 06:53 UK I sold 4,184.38 under the 4,188 line, a MEDIUM level (this week's session highs) with no closed rejection candle. The 07:00 UK candle ran straight through it to 4,195.21 and I closed at 4,192.93: about -1R, -£6.51.
Trades
1h wick rejection at this week's lows 4,147.5 (level book, strong); entered on the next 1h candle's open. Stop 4,144 (783 ticks, inside the 800 max). About 1R. +£5.80 before £0.04 commission.
Sell under the MEDIUM 4,188 level (Tue/Thu highs) without a closed rejection candle. Did not follow the rules: medium level, no confirmed close. Closed at 4,192.93 as price ran to 4,195.21 (about -1R). -£6.47 plus £0.04 commission.
Lessons
- Stop rule for the 1h/4h rejection test (Jason): the stop goes beyond the LEVEL, capped at $8 (800 ticks), not beyond the whole wick. 1h/4h wicks are often $15–20, so wick stops would rule out most trades. Price came back to 4,147.35, $3.35 from the stop: the log tracks how close these stops come, to check the rule over time.
- Rule break, logged honestly: a sell at a MEDIUM level without a confirmed close. Medium levels are where price often trades straight through; the plan only trades strong levels with a closed rejection. The win and the loss cancel out: the rules made the money, breaking them gave it back.
